Flames Win Close Battle for Championship

2022-03-11

After Saturday's thrilling 5-5 tie between the Knights and the Flames, a very large and nosiy crowd was expecting another great game. And a great game was exactly what they saw.

The Flames were never beaten all season, a strong squad from the first game on. The Knights were a different story. They played 12 regular season games managing 7 points, scoring 23 times and allowing 40 goals with 3 wins. In their 6 playoff games they had 8 points, scored 23 goals, but most impressively they only allowed 17 goals and again had 3 wins in half as many games.

The Knights got on the board first as Jagger Chesterman raced in and scored on a breakaway. Jacob Cooke added to the Knight's lead with his first of three goals. The Flames got one back close to the end of the first period when Hayden Hitchens scored his first of the night.

The Knight's regained their two goal lead in the second period when Jacob Cooke notched his second, but Hayden Hitchens replied for the Flames shortly after with his second on an assit from brother Cooper. But the Knights were not done as Jacob Cooke scored for a hatrick on the last shift of the second frame and got back the two goal lead once more.

The third period it was all Flames and specifically Hayden Hitchens as he score three more times with another assist from Cooper. The Knights pulled goalie Logan Cooke but just couldn't manage to tie up the game.

Throughout the tight match both goalies, Logan Cooke and Jacob Murray, showed the raucous fans how much they had improved during the season. First liners that could barely stand on the ice in September were skating hard after the puck. Every save, every shot, every turnover and every goal was met with the sound of cheers, bells, clappers and horns. In the small confines of Delaney Arena things were much louder than the good old Gardens but it was definitley a fun game to witness and a great one to wrap up the season.
